IREX Holds Groundbreaking Symposium on University Administration

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
IREX's "International Symposium on University Administration: Methods and
Models" was held in Moscow, Russia, April 15-16, 2002. Over 175 officials in
higher education from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, the Russian Federation,
Ukraine, the United States, and Uzbekistan participated, including
approximately 30 rectors of Eurasian universities, 10 officials from six
different Ministries of Education, and 22 American specialists on higher
education. All participants were welcomed by Dr. Mark G. Pomar, President of
IREX.

The symposium offered a total of 13 sessions to participants in both plenary
and small-group formats. Sessions covered a broad range of university
management issues facing universities around the world. Please see IREX's
webpage: www.irex.org/programs/uasp for more information about the program,
the symposium agenda, and copies of the presentation materials.

The next stage of the program will be the Fellowships in University
Administration exchange initiative. In September 2002, up to 25 university
administrators from Eurasia will come to the United States to spend 10 weeks
working with their US counterparts.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT PROGRAM
IREX has worked with institutions of higher education in Europe, Eurasia,
and the United States for over 30 years, contributing to research by
individual scholars, curriculum development, institutional linkages, and the
development of an international community. Drawing on extensive contacts and
resources in both the American and Eurasian higher education fields, IREX is
uniquely positioned to facilitate university administration reform in
classical universities in the former Soviet Union. The University
Administration Support Program works to improve the administration,
integration into the global community, and self-sufficiency of a selected
group of well established state universities that offer classical courses of
study in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and
Uzbekistan. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the program
benefits university administrators by exposing them to pertinent management
skills and models through a three-tiered program, the first stage of which
was the Symposium on University Administration.

Please contact IREX at <uadmin at irex.org> or (202) 628-8188 for more
information regarding the University Administration Support Program.
