IREX is pleased to announce the launch of the University Administration
Support Program (UASP), funded through a grant from the Carnegie Corporation
of New York.
IREX will work to improve the administration, integration into the global
community, and self-sufficiency of a selected group of well-established
state universities offering classical courses of study in Russia, Belarus,
Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. IREX will build on the
Corporation's work in supporting higher education by including grantees
under their Centers for Advanced Study and Education (CASE) program in the
pool of participating institutions.
IREX's UASP will benefit university administrators by exposing them to
pertinent management skills and models through a three-tiered program
designed to provide introductory training to a large number of university
administrators and Ministry of Education professionals in the region, while
providing more concentrated funding to those university administrators who
demonstrate they have the initiative, skills, and institutional support
necessary to turn their institutions into models of administrative
excellence in the region. Program elements include:
1. An introductory University Administration Symposium in Moscow,
Russia in spring 2002 that will introduce basic concepts and models in
university management to approximately 200 administrators from the target
countries.
2. US Intensive Training Exchange Fellowships for up to 25
administrators to spend 10 weeks at host universities in the United States.
IREX will place each visiting administrator with a counterpart at a
respected US university to work one-on-one on a specific university
management topic.
3. A Pilot Project Grants competition for approximately 10 universities
to jumpstart reforms stemming from the US intensive training exchanges.
